14 Variations on the Peruvian National Anthem
This composition is dedicated to my home country, Peru. Released in 2021, a historical year due to the celebration of the 200 years of Peruvian independence, these 14 variations are based upon Peru’s national anthem, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful anthems in the world, often compared to the French “La Marseillaise”.
My goal as a composer with this piece is to promote one of the most iconic pieces of Peruvian music, to introduce the Peruvian anthem to the world, and to reinforce the Peruvian national identity as we celebrate 200 years of our nation's history. For this reason, I deliberately composed this piano piece in a musical language that, I believe, most people can appreciate and enjoy.
The variations showcased in this composition vary in difficulty levels and styles, ranging from classical and baroque to Peruvian folk dances and even ragtime. Each variation has posed a unique challenge to my creativity. Essentially, comprising 14 mini compositions, these variations are ideal for any pianist to add to their repertoire, as they can be performed either as a complete piece or as a selection of any number of variations.
Despite being a celebratory composition, this piece was released in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the most significant health crisis in recent history. Consequently, this composition also aims to foster a sense of unity and togetherness among Peruvians during these challenging times, given that Peru has been one of the countries most profoundly affected by this global pandemic
