14 Variations on the Peruvian National Anthem - for Solo Piano

14 Variations on the Peruvian National Anthem - for Solo Piano

This composition is dedicated to my home country, Peru. Released on 2021, a historical year because it is the celebration of the 200 years of peruvian independence, these 14 variations are based upon Peru’s national anthem, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful anthems in the world, usually compared to the French “La Marseillaise”.

My aim as a composer with this piece is to promote one of the most iconic pieces of peruvian music, to make the peruvian anthem known in the world and to strengthen the peruvian national identity towards the celebration of the 200 years of history as a nation. Because of this, I have deliberately written this piano piece in a musical language, I believe, most people could appreciate and enjoy.

The variations featured in this composition vary in levels of difficulty and styles, ranging from classical, to baroque, to peruvian folk dances and even ragtime. Each and every variation has challenged my creativity. Being essentially 14 mini compositions, these variations are ideal for any pianist to add to their repertoire, since it can always be performed either as a whole piece or as a selection of any number of variations.

Despite being a celebratory composition, this piece is released in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the biggest sanitary crisis in recent history. Because of this, this composition also attempts to bring a sense of unity and togetherness among Peruvians amidst these difficult times, since Peru has been one of the countries hit the hardest by this global pandemic.
